Historical Colorado Spider Web natural Turquoise 27 necklace Antique Cpt Lewis Evans pioneer Cherokee. This is a large and heavy handcrafted antique Turquoise necklace. The largest bead is 1.5″ wide, by 1.25″ tall, and 5/8 thick. The smallest bead is 7/16 wide. It is strung on black thread that is knotted and frayed. There is No clasp. It is 27 long. Beautiful Colorado Spiderweb turquoise, with black and brown matrix. This necklace belonged to my 2x great grandmother, who was the grand daughter of Captain Lewis Evans, of Washington Arkansas, who forged and lead the Evans/ Cherokee wagon Trail in 1849 headed to the gold field’s of California. I was told that she had this necklace in her possession when she moved to California in 1932. At the tender age of 13, in 1878, my great great grandmother set out with her 2 younger brothers, and an Indian guide, who was a dear friend of Cpt. Evans, on a harrowing trek from north Texas to Altus, Oklahoma. (Her grandfather, Cpt Evans, eventually retired to Gonzales, Texas, where he is buried). In her things, I also found information and papers about Chief Dennis Wolf Bushyhead, (which had also set out for California on the Cherokee trail at about the same time), but I have not found a genealogical link to him and my family nor have I found out if he was a part of this original, pioneering group of Cherokee’s on their quest to find Gold in California. Perhaps he was a family friend? The oldest of 6 children, I’ve often wondered why she left the safety of her home with her two younger brothers, ages 7 and 3, to take a dangerous trip, on foot to Oklahoma. Their mother may have been ill at this time and perhaps the grandparents could not take care of so many children. Their mother, passed away at a young age. During this trek with the Indian guide, they walked over 100 miles and faced many challenges along the way. When they arrived in Oklahoma, they spent many years living with the Seminole Indians who took great care of them. Later, in 1923, Senie’s brother,, JA Newsom, wrote an autobiography entitled, “The Life and Practice of the Wild and Modern Indian”. In his book, he writes in detail about their long and dangerous journey to Oklahoma, and mentions one instance where, Senie, shot and killed a Mexican lion to protect herself and her brothers. She was a force. My grandmother, during her life, worked as an Apothecary and helped many people along the way. Sadly, I recently discovered that she is buried in a Southern California cemetery in an unmarked grave. Please view all pictures as they are an important part of the description.
